Writing Contests

A list of writing contests that charge no entry fee is available in our monthly newsletter.  This varies from month to month.  For more information about a subscription, please contact us.

The Greater Canton Writers’ Guild sponsors two yearly writing competitions:

The Marlene Stottsberry award for excellence in fiction and the Ken Miller award for excellence in non-fiction. These contests run from March 31st to July 31st of every year. Because there is no entry fee to enter these contests, we will not be mailing awards.

All winners will be announced, acknowledged, and awarded at the Guild’s Anniversary dinner each September.  We ask that winners be present at the dinner to in order to accept their awards.  For those unable to participate in the awards dinner, we ask that they not participate.

These writing competitions are held in honor of two long-time Guild members who donated their time and talents to the Writers’ Guild. Framed, signed certificates will be given out to those placing in these contests from Honorable Mentions to Award of Distinction and the top winner of each competition will also receive a check from the Guild.

IN HONOR OF….

Marlene Stottsberry

Marlene Stottsberry served the Guild as secretary, vice-president, and two years as president. She is commemorated for the acts of kindness, encouragement, and generosity that marked her leadership style.   She bequeathed a cash gift to the Canton Writers’ Guild.  Therefore, the executive board  established The Marlene Stottsberry Award to continue her spirit of encouragement. This is in addition to the prizes awarded at the monthly Guild meetings. Rewarding creative effort is the cornerstone of the Guild, and we acknowledge Marlene’s contribution with gratitude to continue her spirit of encouragement.
