Writing As We Mature

Writing As We Mature

By Eleni S. Byrnes

While browsing poetry websites one day, at times the ages of the poets were quite apparent, especially poems having themes of unrequited love, angst and futility. Those feelings that can be associated with the teen years.

Which led to some pondering on how life experiences as we mature, play such a great part in our writing. We write best about what we know. Our Guild has a wonderful strength because of the various age groups represented by all its members. This is due in part to our various outside interests, styles and genres of writing. The ways in which we view life from our own perspectives and the life we have lived also influence our writing style.

The more of life we live, the more material we have to draw upon for our writing. Although younger generations may have fresher perspectives as they are experiencing much in life for the first time, this also makes for good reading.

I can recall being their age and having those very same feelings. Having had the opportunity of these experiences in our lives, even the bad ones, serves to both enrich and play a great part in all our writings.

With all of life that we experience, each section of our lives weaves its threads into the rich tapestry of our craft.
